Export compliance
The International Phytosanitary Standard for Wood Packaging, otherwise known as ISPM-15, mandates that wood packaging be heat-treated before being exported to other countries to reduce the risk of pest infestation. These guidelines were created to reduce the chances of an infested pallet introducing an invasive species into an ecosystem that can’t support it.
Lower risk of mold and bacterial growth
Wood is a porous substance that absorb moisture. Because the pallet holds on to the moisture it encounters during use, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria and mould. Mold and bacterial growth on the surface of a pallet can spread to the products it transports. Heat-treating wood makes it more resistant to water, mould, and bacteria, lowering the risk of product contamination and load rejection due to sanitary issues.
